Silver Circle
… Caring for those who first cared for us …
This program is
designed for student and adult volunteers to participate in visitation of
elderly residents in retirement and nursing homes, and possibly in residential
areas. Many patients are rarely visited
by their families. Many residents are
ill. Our goal is to provide companions
for them … to bring a smile to their lonely faces. There are several areas in which a person can
volunteer with the
·
Persons 16 and older pledge to visit an elderly person once a week for
one semester or a year. Activities can include playing games, making crafts,
taking a walk, reading, etc.
·
Students 13 and older can pledge to visit an elderly person in pairs
once a week.
·
Volunteers may sign up to entertain at a nursing or retirement home
(music, skit, etc.) or participate in craft activities with the senior
residents.
·
Persons who have elderly neighbors living alone are encouraged to check
up on them twice a week (under 16 must be escorted by an adult). This includes bringing the
neighbor his/her newspaper, picking up the mail, groceries, etc.
·
Writing letters to the residents on a weekly basis
·
Christmas caroling and holiday events
Requirements: Those who pledge for weekly visitations must
fill out a form to be accepted into the program. These persons must also check in once every
two weeks to report the time spent with his/her assigned resident.
Purpose: This is a challenge for you to start caring
about the people who are too often forgotten.
We live in a very progressive nation. Those who worked hard to provide
for us beautiful opportunities in life are now neglected to a serious
degree. Let’s start caring about those
who first cared for us.
